As we transition into the colder temperature months of the year, its important to be risk aware of one of the leading causes of structure fires in Ontario. IMPROPERLY MAINTAINED HEATING EQUIPMENT!!!

Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of fires & property loss claims during the winter months each year in Ontario. As building owners, it is imperative that a pro-active attitude and mindset be the gold standard. In order to keep our loved ones and buildings safe there are a few simple but effective things we can do to help reduce this risk.

• Ensure woodstoves, fireplaces and fireplace inserts are installed by a qualified technician according to manufacturer’s instructions.
• Have your heating system, vents and chimneys inspected and cleaned annually by a qualified service technician.
• Ensure all outside heating vents are not blocked.
• Allow ashes from woodstoves or fireplaces to cool before emptying them into a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Keep the container outside.
• Always use a fire screen around a fireplace.

Recently, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has raised objections to proposed amendments to the National Building Code of Canada that would allow woodframe construction of up to 12 storeys. Concerns brought up to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes included;

1. The lack of resources of many Canadian Fire Departments to respond safely & effectively to these combustible high-rise structures.
2. The building code doesn’t reference or require any measurable level of fire protection for any given structure, such as in NFPA 1710
